PopTech Social Innovation Fellow Emily Pilloton is the founder of Project H Design. After she left PopTech in 2009, she vowed to do better and more honest work. This led her to the poorest county in North Carolina where she created a “shop class with purpose” and worked with students to empower them to improve their communities. She keeps kids engaged in school by creating public architecture projects including the construction of a farmer’s market. Through her Girl’s Garage project, she builds skills and self esteem by teaching young girls how to weld, pour concrete, and build furniture. She shows us how design and community engagement can be used to forge healthy interpersonal connections and create lasting impact.
